This weekend we celebrate with the Universal Church the Feast of Corpus Christi or the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ offers a beautiful and rich image of God and humanity as one. Whilst Christians enjoy this understanding it has wider implications in society. The word corporate derives from the word corpus. Corporate is understood as a company or an organisation. It is also understood as a body with many parts working together with a common goal. A company exists with an aim to produce the best products and services for their customers. This is simply not possible without the collaborative efforts of their different departments: finance, research, marketing, and so on.
The Church, one of the oldest corporates in the world has many parts and departments too. At our local level, our parish has many moving parts that uphold and keep the community alive and moving into the direction it wants. Think of the many ministries, committees, and councils.
Each week our community gathers around the Body of Christ, who we believe is present sacramentally. Christ is at the centre of our worship. The communal aspect Christ in the Eucharist is connected to the Feast we celebrated last week, Holy Trinity. The Trinity is a community of persons with one mind and one heart working towards the good of God’s people. Christ who comes from a community, who is community and who draws us into community. Community is central to who we are and how we operate so it couldn’t be emphasised enough!
Celebrating this Feast we are reminded of our role as members to help strengthen the community in which we live. By strengthening the community we are also strengthened by other’s contributions of their many talents. One of the many things that our community does so well is music. Thanks to the talents of many musicians our experience of Liturgy becomes transformative and uplifting. You can probably think of many others who contribute to the overall life of the parish.
